As I compose for my bands or do commissioned work, a lot of other music comes out of … I don´t know. Most of the time, I am indecisive what to do with these pieces. Audio files & sheet music pile up in my studio and since I don´t have a practical use for that music, I disregard my own work.
That´s gonna stop now.
I´m happy to announce the foundation of my “Clemens Wenger Lab“.
Basically, it´s a Bandcamp page for now. Time and again, I´ll fill it up with recent inventions. I won´t “dress” the music to fit a style or any expectations -just let it loose.
You can listen and download for free; also pay if you want. In exchange: share your feedback with me, please! What do you like, what annoys you and why?
The lab shall be my platform to experiment with form and content.
So let´s get it started: HERE—->

Years have gone by, and time has come for my comeback with the ensemble “Studio Dan“. Back in 2011, my friend Daniel Riegler and I composed a concert program together, called “Dekadenz“. Over the last months, we refurbished the music and added new pieces to present a new version of our mutual project on 2 dates in November. I composed a 13min piece called “Schweinslunch“, featuring my long-time partner in crime Clemens Salesny on alto saxophone. Hold your hats!
Furthermore, I came up with a piece for ensemble and cooking performance. The great Leo Riegler will cook a “Wiener Schnitzel” live on stage while the ensemble will play my 7-piece suite “Vom Schweinernen”, to accompany the culinary event.
Don´t miss the performances in Vienna (Nov 16th) and Zurich, CH (Nov, 19th) – see also my Dates page for further information.
Autumn is busy: 5/8erl in Ehr´n – Die Strottern & JazzWerkstatt Wien – theatre work with Jacqueline Kornmüller – playing around with my new modular synthesizer setup – Basketball – LOVE & Campari Soda – Cheers, Clemens
Let´s start this blog entry with looking into the near future. JazzWerkstatt´s “Vienna Roomservice” festival is just around the corner. Save the date – September 22 – 25, at Vienna´s Porgy&Bess music club. I will take part in the opening concert of the festival, a new project called “Control Voltage“. We´re four musicians on analogue synthesizers – Elektro Guzzis Bernie Hammer & Jakob Schneidewind, Affine Records´ all-rounder Sixtus Preiss and myself. Here´s our fabulous selfie:
We also filmed a short clip during one of our rehearsals, check it out:
Guess what, I´d like to invite you to our concert! Sept 22, 8:30pm @ Porgy&Bess
—Of course, my band 5/8erl in Ehr´n also plays quite a lot concerts this autumn – check out my Concert Dates page.
Once more, Jazzseminar Schönbach was a very nice experience. For the workshop´s 10-year-anniversary, I came up with some special ideas for my ensemble project. We composed and performed our own version of John Cage´s Water Walk, then we remixed found sounds and samples according to Pierre Schaeffer´s concepts of Musique Concrete, produced smashing hip-hop tracks and beautifully strange pop songs. My ensemble players and composers were just phenomenal, working relentlessly for a week to ensure we get everything together for our performance. Thank you!!! Here we are partying after the show:
And that´s how I look like during rehearsals;)
Back in June, Studio Dan Strings & myself performed Neapel at Vienna´s beautiful sight Strudlhofstiege. Again, JazzWerkstatt Wien curated this festival, and I´m sure it was one of those days people will remember years from now. Approximately 1000 people came out all day long to listen to 13 intimate concerts on this public outdoor staircase. Luckily, we filmed one song of our performance and here it is for you to watch:
Other random happenings of the last months:
– MORPHING II premiere (picture above) with JOV and dance choreography was very nice, we recorded one track and hopefully I´ll be able to share it with you soon.
– I finished my master studies at DUK “Music for Film&Media”, and finally earned my Master of Arts degree 🙂
– I was also invited to teach a class at the pop!-songwriting workshop at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. It was very intense, we composed 2 new songs together in just three days! Here´s my class and me after our live presentation:
Puh, enough for now. Stay strong! Best, Clemens
It´s time for an update! After 9 years of extensive touring with our band 5/8erl in
Ehr´n, we decided to have a break for 6 months, in order to be ready and relaxed for our ten-year anniversary in 2016. So there´s one concert left on our schedule, on Friday November 6th at Arena Wien – be there!
JazzWerkstatt Wien´s “VIENNA ROOMSERVICE” Festival was a great experience. We premiered “STRONG VIENNA – The Soap Opera”, libretto by Leo Riegler and I composed the music. It was fun rehearsing with a 20 piece ensemble and put our performance on stage. Here are some impressions, photos by Rania Moslam:
We also played “MORPHING”, a suite for 13 piece band I composed for the Jazzorchester Vorarlberg at the festival. The response was great and the ensemble played brilliant once again.
Of course people were coming en masse to the festival to hear our JazzWerkstatt Wien New Ensemble perform with keyboard wizard Dorian Concept. The program and the arrangements for an electroacoustic band work really well imho – so look out when we play again and don´t miss this! If you happen to live in / near Tirol you´re lucky, we´re playing a show at fmRiese Festival at the Swarovski Kristallwelten on November 27th. Look at my DATES section ->
Holding a lecture at “Austrian Composers Day” at the University of Vienna was also a nice change in my work schedule. It was entitled “Make Music – Make Money” and I talked about my work and experience as a composer, discussing copyright issues and possibilities to earn money. Photo by ÖKB:
So, I´m looking forward to spending more time at home in Vienna, when we have a little vacation from our 5/8erl touring life the next months. I´ll be able to finish the production for “NEAPEL” (my new project and “sweetheart”) and also finally finish my master thesis “Hybrid Scoring” for my studies at the Danube University (MAS program “Music for Film&Media”). Hopefully my life will also get boring a little, so I´ll be able to update this page more frequently and provide you with some new tracks and videos of my latest work. All the best, Clemens
