Let´s start this blog entry with looking into the near future. JazzWerkstatt´s “Vienna Roomservice” festival is just around the corner. Save the date – September 22 – 25, at Vienna´s Porgy&Bess music club. I will take part in the opening concert of the festival, a new project called “Control Voltage“. We´re four musicians on analogue synthesizers – Elektro Guzzis Bernie Hammer & Jakob Schneidewind, Affine Records´ all-rounder Sixtus Preiss and myself. Here´s our fabulous selfie:
We also filmed a short clip during one of our rehearsals, check it out:
Guess what, I´d like to invite you to our concert! Sept 22, 8:30pm @ Porgy&Bess
—Of course, my band 5/8erl in Ehr´n also plays quite a lot concerts this autumn – check out my Concert Dates page.
Once more, Jazzseminar Schönbach was a very nice experience. For the workshop´s 10-year-anniversary, I came up with some special ideas for my ensemble project. We composed and performed our own version of John Cage´s Water Walk, then we remixed found sounds and samples according to Pierre Schaeffer´s concepts of Musique Concrete, produced smashing hip-hop tracks and beautifully strange pop songs. My ensemble players and composers were just phenomenal, working relentlessly for a week to ensure we get everything together for our performance. Thank you!!! Here we are partying after the show:
And that´s how I look like during rehearsals;)
Back in June, Studio Dan Strings & myself performed Neapel at Vienna´s beautiful sight Strudlhofstiege. Again, JazzWerkstatt Wien curated this festival, and I´m sure it was one of those days people will remember years from now. Approximately 1000 people came out all day long to listen to 13 intimate concerts on this public outdoor staircase. Luckily, we filmed one song of our performance and here it is for you to watch:
Other random happenings of the last months:
– MORPHING II premiere (picture above) with JOV and dance choreography was very nice, we recorded one track and hopefully I´ll be able to share it with you soon.
– I finished my master studies at DUK “Music for Film&Media”, and finally earned my Master of Arts degree 🙂
– I was also invited to teach a class at the pop!-songwriting workshop at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. It was very intense, we composed 2 new songs together in just three days! Here´s my class and me after our live presentation:
Puh, enough for now. Stay strong! Best, Clemens
“NEAPEL” – that´s how I call my new project. We played a live concert back in March, and the last months I´ve been working on the music and we finally got to record the tracks in July. I´d describe “NEAPEL” as electroacoustic songs, performed by the fantastic Studio Dan Strings, featuring my work as a composer and piano/synthesizer player. The next months will be dedicated to polishing the tracks and post-production and I plan to release the record in January 2016. My friend and photographer Rania Moslam took some nice pictures during our recording session – have a look:
Stay tuned for more information on “NEAPEL” and the first audio examples of the music!
Another highlight of the year just passed by – the wonderful Jazzseminar Schönbach. It was a pleasure to rehearse and conduct a stellar ensemble for one week. We´ve been working on music by Dorian Concept and managed to perform three of his electronic tracks with our 13-piece band at the final concert. Here´s a snapshot and memory of our group:
Speaking of Dorian Concept: We´ll play the second concert with JazzWerkstatt Wien New Ensemble & Dorian Concept at our yearly VIENNA ROOMSERVICE Festival. Besides performing with this group, I´ll also stage my electroacoustic suite “MORPHING” with the wonderful Jazzorchester Vorarlberg for the very last time, since we´re already working on a sequel of MORPHING, which will be premiered in May 2016. Furthermore, I´m involved in the production of “STRONG VIENNA – The Soap Opera” – a performance involving 20 musicians from different genres. All this, and much more, takes place at VIENNA ROOMSERVICE Festival, from September 24 – 27, at Vienna´s Porgy&Bess music club. Be there!
Too many things were going on lately to keep track here. But now I´m trying to give you a short overview of my past view weeks.
Once again, Jazzseminar Schönbach was a highlight of the year so far. The spirit among the students and the teachers is exciting and I always recharge my batteries during the workshop. My piano students were super and again my favourite thing was coaching my ensemble. We had an amazing instrumentation: 2 live electronic players, drums, electric bass, electric guitar, 2 keyboard players, violin, 2 flute players + facebass, trumpet, 2 singers + ukulele. Our slogan was “Electro Jazz” and we were inspired by Jimi Hendrix´”The Wind cries Mary”, one of my all time favourite songs. The ensemble composed new pieces and we played an exciting 15min opus at the final concert. Thanks everybody at Jazzseminar Schönbach! Here some snapshots of my ensemble:
Then we played a fantastic concert at sold out Arena in Vienna with 5/8erl in Ehr´n. 1100 people were there and the crowd was amazing – our fans are the greatest:
From September 5-8 our JazzWerkstatt Wien festival “VIENNA ROOMSERVICE” took place at Porgy&Bess. Many people attended the festival and the artists played incredible concerts. My favourite evening was Friday, Andreas Harrer aka antiehdas heated up the audience with a fantastic 10min performance “Kreation und Depression”. Then my long-time companions Maja Osojnik and Matija Schellander teamed up with Raumschiff Englmayr and Daniel Lercher to present their audio-visual performace “W.I.L.D”, which was very “trance” and an archaic experience. Afterwards Mira Lu Kovacs took the center stage and played with her trio “Schmied´s Puls”. They presented their new record “Play Dead”, which in my opinion is a masterpiece. I was very touched by their concert and I highly recommend listening to Mira and her music – on record or live. Here´s the new CD, available HERE:
Last week I went to Nice in France to participate in “Jeux de la Francophonie” with singer Valérie Sajdik. We played a preselection concert and advanced to the finals. The finals took place at the opera in Nice. Five participants were selected to perform a 15min live set. What I didn´t know before – it was broadcasted on French television and over 50 million people tuned in! We also performed a composition of mine called “Les Nuits Blanches”, which is also the title song of Valérie´s upcoming album, to be released on October 7.
So far and no further! Have a good start in autumn everybody!
Vienna is hot! I´m enjoying summer in my hood, although there´s plenty of work to do. Lately, we were touring a lot with 5/8erl in Ehr´n. It was very attractive playing huge concerts as support act for big German acts like Sportfreunde Stiller or La BrassBands. For an acoustic band like us it´s very unusual playing big stages with thousands of people waiting to be animated to dance and scream. I think we did a good job staying cool but focused and people really enjoyed our laid-back approach. Here some impressions:
One thing I can´t conceal:
I´M THE VERTIKALLBALL WORLD CHAMP 2013!!!!!
The fight took place in Hamburg, Germany, August 28. It was a hot day and the best players from all over the world came together to play unfamous but brilliant Vertikallball nearby the Alster. We had 5 qualification games and the best 5 players advanced to the ultimate final. The last two players standing were my colleague from the Viennese-Vertikalball-League Michael Bruckner-Weinhuber and me. Michael is also co-inventor of this sport and a true master. I lost to him in the finals 2011 in Berlin. Last year he was Vice World Champ. After last years champ Sven P. Pohl (Germany) was eliminated, I knew Michael was the man to beat. I was a little nervous before going into the last game. I played pretty solid in the qualification but I couldn´t win one single game, not even did I come in second. I tried not to analyze what I could do better to excel, instead I focused on my strenghts, believing in myself and my dream to become one of the world´s greates athletes (like I´ve always read in sportsman biographies – thank you Michael Jordan). From a distance, I´d say it was a walk to the championship. I can´t remember one single mistake. I didn´t think, I just played Vertikalball. A thing of beauty!
I thought about it a lot recently, but I´m staying with music. I´ll not leave my bandmates and colleagues all over the world alone. Vertikallball is nice, but my profession is composer and musician.
So, the next thing I do is Jazzseminar Schönbach. I´m loving it and I will report afterwards. HAVE A LOOK at my dates, September is HUGE!
