Bellezza e Sensualità

A Napoli June 2019

There hasn’t been much to report in 2019 so far: no cool tours to play, no awards to win, no evocative compositions for the theatre to complete – really, nothing going on!
I may have been fairly lazy this spring, but I can assure you, apart from that I lead a perfectly virtuous life. I am not attracted to criminal behaviour, even at school I wasn’t into truancy or cheating, instead I try to make my way playing fair. Daring, isn’t it?

Despite this unbusiness-like approach, luck keeps finding me. Here is a brief overview of my sisymphonic efforts in this absurd world:

***24 July 2019 – PREMIERE – THE URGE OF NIGHT***

MSH_9334Clemens Wenger arranges compositions by Mira Lu Kovacs
Glatt & Verkehrt Festival | Krems a. d. Donau

It’s really happening!
For years Mira and I have been phantasising about an orchestral reworking of her music with Schmieds Puls. We have waited patiently for the opportunity to arise and are now all excited about the premiere of “The Urge of Night” at the wonderful Glatt & Verkehrt Festival.

The line-up is truly extraordinary: a 10-piece chamber ensemble, specially put together for the occasion, with a horn quartet at its core. Yes, a horn quartet. No room for treacly violins. Here goes:

Mira Lu Kovacs – vocals, e-guit
Clemens Wenger – arrangement, synthesizer
Beate Wiesinger – bass
Christoph Walder – horn
Julia Pesendorfer – horn

Elisabeth Hirzinger – horn
Jason Pfiester – horn
Mona Matbou Riahi – clarinet, bass clarinet
Christof Dienz – bassoon
Igor Gross – perc

So I have not been completely lazy this spring: notes don’t write themselves and the first ideas are not always the best. Much has been thrown out again and there is still a lot to do to be ready on Wednesday, 24 July 2019 – 19:00 – Winzer Krems, Glatt & Verkehrt

Come and tell everybody, because: “5/8erl in Ehr´n live are like the 1997 Starting Five of the Chicago Bulls” (as the press said about us)

If this photo gives you the creeps then you are probably the ideal target audience for EMBRACING SHITSTORM! We have already liberated thousands of people from their desire for harmony. Now we include the Popfest Wien in our clients. About time too. On Saturday, 27 July 2019, at the Popfest Wien, we will play our aggressive healing mass in the Wien Museum.

Here is a short mysterious glimpse of our magic -> TRAILER:

Kristin Gruber and JazzWerkstatt Wien announce the end of the divided society (…) As a medial collective they devote themselves to the cause of enlightenment, using the healing power of human aggression. (…) Kristin Gruber embodies an aggressive icon in a performance somewhere between hope channel, election rally address, computer game personality test, esoteric mass and keynote speech, explores her audience’s propensity for violence, initiates world peace and wonders about an aggressive utopia.” (press release)

AUTUMN PIGS – NEW SONGS

03sd_by_ditz_fejer-width-660

Years have gone by, and time has come for my comeback with the ensemble “Studio Dan“. Back in 2011, my friend Daniel Riegler and I composed a concert program together, called “Dekadenz“. Over the last months, we refurbished the music and added new pieces to present a new version of our mutual project on 2 dates in November. I composed a 13min piece called “Schweinslunch“, featuring my long-time partner in crime Clemens Salesny on alto saxophone. Hold your hats!
Furthermore, I came up with a piece for ensemble and cooking performance. The great Leo Riegler will cook a “Wiener Schnitzel” live on stage while the ensemble will play my 7-piece suite “Vom Schweinernen”, to accompany the culinary event.
Don´t miss the performances in Vienna (Nov 16th) and Zurich, CH (Nov, 19th) – see also my Dates page for further information.
Autumn is busy: 5/8erl in Ehr´nDie Strottern & JazzWerkstatt Wientheatre work with Jacqueline Kornmüller – playing around with my new modular synthesizer setup – Basketball – LOVE & Campari Soda – Cheers, Clemens

SUMMER DON´T GO

Hello World!
Let´s start this blog entry with looking into the near future. JazzWerkstatt´s “Vienna Roomservice” festival is just around the corner. Save the date – September 22 – 25, at Vienna´s Porgy&Bess music club. I will take part in the opening concert of the festival, a new project called “Control Voltage“. We´re four musicians on analogue synthesizers – Elektro Guzzis Bernie Hammer & Jakob Schneidewind, Affine Records´ all-rounder Sixtus Preiss and myself. Here´s our fabulous selfie:

We also filmed a short clip during one of our rehearsals, check it out:

Guess what, I´d like to invite you to our concert! Sept 22, 8:30pm @ Porgy&Bess
—Of course, my band 5/8erl in Ehr´n also plays quite a lot concerts this autumn – check out my Concert Dates page.
Once more, Jazzseminar Schönbach was a very nice experience. For the workshop´s 10-year-anniversary, I came up with some special ideas for my ensemble project. We composed and performed our own version of John Cage´s Water Walk, then we remixed found sounds and samples according to Pierre Schaeffer´s concepts of Musique Concrete, produced smashing hip-hop tracks and beautifully strange pop songs. My ensemble players and composers were just phenomenal, working relentlessly for a week to ensure we get everything together for our performance. Thank you!!! Here we are partying after the show:

Back in June, Studio Dan Strings & myself performed Neapel at Vienna´s beautiful sight Strudlhofstiege. Again, JazzWerkstatt Wien curated this festival, and I´m sure it was one of those days people will remember years from now. Approximately 1000 people came out all day long to listen to 13 intimate concerts on this public outdoor staircase.  Luckily, we filmed one song of our performance and here it is for you to watch:

Other random happenings of the last months:

– MORPHING II premiere (picture above) with JOV and dance choreography was very nice, we recorded one track and hopefully I´ll be able to share it with you soon.
– I finished my master studies at DUK “Music for Film&Media”, and finally earned my Master of Arts degree 🙂
– I was also invited to teach a class at the pop!-songwriting workshop at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.  It was very intense, we composed 2 new songs together in just three days! Here´s my class and me after our live presentation:

Puh, enough for now. Stay strong! Best, Clemens
